Longer Works
Although I mainly write essays and articles, I'm also an aspiring novelist. What writer isn't? Below is some information on some of my longer works.
How Do I Feel About the New Baby? (picture book, 700 words)
When a new baby joins a family, older siblings encounter many feelings, both positive and negative. How Do I Feel About the New Baby? follows three-year-old Ana through the new emotions that come with the arrival of her baby sister. Each two-page layout highlights an emotion Ana experiences and contains an open-ended question about that feeling for the parent and child to discuss. This interactive format will help children voice their feelings and reassure them that the negative emotions they may experience—such as jealousy, anger and sadness—are both normal and “okay.”
Loud Lani (picture book, 600 words)
This manuscript placed second in the 2010 Pacific Northwest Writers Association Literary Contest.
Everything about three-year-old Lani is little, except for her voice, which is BIG! Her voice is so BIG and so LOUD that Auntie calls her megaphone and Sister says that Lani has no volume control. Everyone thinks that she's shouting, but her voice just comes out that way all by itself. Lani's voice causes so much trouble that she stops talking, which makes her family worry that she'll never speak again. When Buckles, the neighbor's dog, is lost in a snowstorm, Lani uses her enormous voice to find her, making everyone glad that Lani is loud -- including Lani.
Adeline's Mirror (Middle-grade novel, 45,000 words)
This manuscript was a finalist in the 2011 Pacific Northwest Writers Association Literary Contest in the Middle-Grade/Young Adult category.
Twelve-year-old Amber is sure that spending the summer with her distant father in his dilapidated old house will be a bore, but a ghost girl named Adeline has other plans. With the help of Gus, the geek-next-door, and Miss Tillie, the wacky old lady across the street, Amber must decipher the ghost's messages and solve a hundred-year-old mystery. While exploring graveyards, historic archives and the Victorian house the ghost called home, Amber learns about the past by working towards a new future with her father. Adeline's Mirror, a paranormal middle-grade novel, is a humorous and spine-tingling ghost story.
